Welcome Blanket at LAX
Two exhibitions. One Global Gateway. Countless stories of welcome.
A welcome, made by hand
Airports are places of movement: people depart, arrive, reunite, relocate, and begin again. Across LAX, Welcome Blanket brings handmade artworks and the personal histories carried within them into this shared space.
Every Welcome Blanket is made by hand and accompanied its maker’s story about immigration, migration, relocation, or the meaning of home. The blankets are displayed publicly before being gifted, along with their notes, through partners refugee organizations to our newly arrived neighbors.
Together, the Terminal 4 and Terminal 7–8 installations ask a simple question: What could it mean to welcome and be welcomed?
On view at Los Angeles International Airport:
Terminal 4: American Airlines Arrivals / Baggage Claim
On view through January 2027
Accessible without a ticket
Terminal 7-8: United Airlines Departures / Connector
On view through March 2027
Post-TSA
Terminals 7–8
A welcome encountered in transit
Location: United Terminals 7–8, beyond TSA
On view through: March 2027
Access: Available to ticketed passengers after security.
In United’s connected Terminals 7 and 8, Welcome Blanket meets travelers in the space between where they have been and where they are going. Handmade blankets and personal stories offer a pause within the rhythms of departure and connection. It’s reminder that movement is a human, and that welcome is something we make together.
Terminal 4
Welcome at the moment of arrival
Location: American Airlines Baggage Claim, Terminal 4
On view through: January 27, 2027
Access: Located in the arrivals/baggage-claim area, and accessible for all airport visitors.
In Terminal 4, Welcome Blanket is encountered at a threshold: the moment a traveler collects their belongings, meets a loved one, or steps into Los Angeles. Surrounded by handmade blankets and stories of migration, arrival becomes an opportunity to reflect on the many journeys that shape a home, and the care a new neighbor deserves.
